Title: Building Confidence in HPV Vaccination: Combatting Hesitancy and Myths

Description: This last session of 2024 was presented by Melanie Kornides, ScD, FNP-BC, RN. Dr. Melanie Kornides is an Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, specializing in adolescent health and vaccination behavior. Her research primarily focuses on understanding and countering health-related misinformation online, with a significant emphasis on the HPV vaccine.

Description: This first session of 2024 was presented by Michael S. Powell, MSc who is Chief of the Registry and Assessment Section Immunization Branch at California Department of Public Health. Michael has been in information technology and IT management for over 25 years and with CDPH since 2010. Michael earned his bachelor's degree in business and information systems, and a Master of Science degree in computer since with an emphasis on database development and administration.

Description: This session will provided an overview of progress in HPV vaccination since introduction of the vaccine in 2006 and presented the results of a recent study that evaluated the effectiveness and feasibility of parent reminders in improving HPV vaccination among adolescents receiving care from a large Federally Qualified Health Center in Los Angeles County.

Description: This session focused on HPV vaccination initiation at age 9 years, as well as how a specific health system handles vaccine refusal and other challenges related to HPV vaccination. The presenter was Alyson Kaye, CNP from Vista Community Clinic. Alyson has been a certified pediatric nurse practitioner for more than 13 years and is currently the Assistant Director for Pediatrics as well as the Nurse Practitioner Float Supervisor at Vista Community Clinic. She has been involved in many quality improvement projects focused on adolescent vaccines and has been an “HPV Vaccine Champion” for more than 5 years.
